The Lookout Mountain is a mountain in the border region of Georgia , Alabama and Tennessee in the United States . It is near Chattanooga . Together with the further northwest lying Sand Mountain, it forms most of the southernmost end of the Cumberland Plateau . The summit called High Point is located at an altitude of 729 m in the area of Walker County . The foothills of the mountain extend into the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. At the end of the northern mountain flank is the village of the same name, Lookout Mountain, Tennessee . South of the border in Georgia is also a town of the same name. From the northern end of the Lookout Mountain, Point Park, the city of Chattanooga and the valley of the Tennessee River can be seen; The mountain was therefore of military importance in the time of the Civil War . On November 24, 1863, it was the scene of the second day of the Battle of Chattanooga , also known as the "Battle above the Clouds".
At Chattanooga there is a cave with the Ruby Falls in the mountain . Other attractions for tourists are the Rock City rock formations . From a vantage point there, the territories of four US states are visible on a clear day - Tennessee, North Carolina , Georgia and Alabama, for example some mountains around Knoxville , Tennessee, which are about 100 miles away.
Martin Luther King mentions Lookout Mountain in his "I Have a Dream" speech
