Jim Guthrie (racing driver)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jim Guthrie (born September 13, 1961 in Gadsden , Alabama ) is a retired American automobile racing driver .

Career

Jim Guthrie made his 1996 Indy Racing League debut with moderate success. When the IRL switched to custom chassis in 1997, Guthrie had to take out a second mortgage to purchase a new chassis. Without sponsors and with the risk of losing his house if he doesn't succeed, he won the second race in the new chassis at the Phoenix International Raceway . For the Indianapolis 500 he was able to win Jacuzzi, a company that manufactures whirlpools, as a sponsor. So he was able to finish the season, finished twelfth in the overall standings and was rookie of the year. In 1998 he took part in four races, but was seriously injured in an accident at the Indianapolis 500. Since then he has not competed in any IRL races.

Guthrie is now the owner of the Guthrie Racing racing team , which competes in the Indy Lights Series .
