Orel Leonard Hershiser IV , nicknamed Bulldog , (born September 16, 1958 in Buffalo , New York ) is a former American baseball player on the position of pitcher . He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1983 to 2000 . After his active career, he worked as a commentator for the Los Angeles Dodgers . He is also a professional poker player.
Career
After Hershiser on the Cherry Hill East High School and Bowling Green State University Baseball had played, he was in the 17th round of the 1979 Major League Baseball Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted . Initially, Hershiser played on the Dodgers' farm teams from 1979 to 1982 . On September 1, 1983, at the age of 24, he made his MLB debut against the Montreal Expos wearing the Dodgers' jersey . In the game, Hershiser pitched an inning and gave up three runs . The Dodgers lost the game 3 to 8.
During his active career Hershiser was three times in the All-Star team of the National League selected (NL). Hershiser's most successful season was in 1988 when he broke Don Drysdale's 20-year record with 59 consecutive innings without a run . He helped the Dodgers win the 1988 World Series and was named the World Series Most Valuable Player . That season he also won the Cy Young Award and a National League Gold Glove . He later took part in two other World Series.
After 12 seasons with the Dodgers, Hershiser spent time with the Cleveland Indians , the San Francisco Giants and the New York Mets before returning to Los Angeles for his final season, where he played his last game on June 26, 2000 against the San Diego Padres denied as a professional. In the game, Hershiser pitched 1 2 ⁄ 3 innings and allowed eight runs. The game lost the Dodgers 5 to 9. After his career as a player, he worked briefly as a coach and team leader for the Texas Rangers before he worked as a commentator for ESPN and later for the Dodgers.
