biography

Mariano Rivera was born in Panama City in 1969 to a fisherman. In 1990 he was the New York Yankees drafted . Already in his first 52 innings in the minor leagues , the right-handed pitcher drew attention with an ERA of just 0.17. Rivera made his debut in the Major Leagues on May 23, 1995 as a starting pitcher against the Anaheim Angels with all-star pitcher Chuck Finley . In the 1995 season Rivera moved between the Minors and the Major League, but was nominated by Buck Showalter for the American League Divisional Series against the Seattle Mariners . Here he convinced against the Mariners despite the elimination of the Yankees from the playoffs, in 5 1/3 innings he did not allow a run and scored eight strikeouts. In the summer, the Yankees had considered giving Rivera to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for David Wells .

From the 1996 season Rivera was then used as a substitute thrower. Here he usually took over the 7th and 8th innings before Closer John Wetteland should end the game in favor of the Yankees. Behind Pat Hentgen and Andy Pettitte , Rivera came third in the Cy Young Awards . Rivera helped the Yankees win their first World Series title since 1978.

John Wetteland left the Yankees after that season. From that point on, Rivera was the Yankees' closer. Many baseball professionals consider Rivera to be the best closer ever. In 1997, he became the first Yankee to receive a save in the All-Star Game. In the American League Divisional Series, Rivera had one of the blackest days of his baseball career. In the fourth game, Rivera took over the pitch with a one-point lead from Mike Stanton . Rivera allowed Sandy Alomar Jr. a home run to equalize, the Indians made another point in the 9th inning, leveled the series and were then able to win Game 5 and eliminate the Yankees.

From 1998 to 2001 Rivera showed his most convincing performances in the play-offs. He was able to achieve 23 consecutive saves and 34 1/3 consecutive innings without allowing a point. World Series successes against the San Diego Padres , Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets were the yield from 1998 to 2000. In the 1999 World Series against the Braves, Rivera was selected as the MVP of the World Series . In Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, however, Rivera's series broke. In that crucial game he lost the lead in the 9th inning and the Yankees were beaten by the Arizona Diamondbacks .

In 2003 Rivera threw in the American League Championship Game against the Boston Red Sox in the 7th game three pointless innings and thus secured the Yankees entry into the World Series .

His best career year was 2005. He missed his first two save chances, but was then able to use the next 31 chances in a row. In total, Rivera had 43 saves on 47 occasions with an ERA of 1.38.

On September 19, 2011, he threw the 602nd save of his career in the Bronx in the 6-4 victory of his Yankees against the Minnesota Twins , breaking Trevor Hoffman's record for the most saves of a single closer.

When Rivera performed at Yankee Stadium , the song Enter Sandman by Metallica was always played. Rivera was the last player in baseball to wear the number 42. This number has not been granted to any player since 1997 as it retired Major League Baseball in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first game . Players who previously used this number were allowed to wear it until they retired. Rivera was inducted into the Hall of Fame in January 2019 . He was the first player in history to be elected without dissenting votes.
