Trevor William Hoffman (born October 13, 1967 in Bellflower , California ) is a retired American baseball player . He played with the San Diego Padres as a closing pitcher from 1993 to 2008 before moving to the Milwaukee Brewers . He has been a free agent since the end of the 2010 season . In 2018 Hoffman was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame .

Career

Hoffman was drafted as a shortstop by the Cincinnati Reds in 1989 , but was repurposed as a pitcher two years later . He played on a minor league team for the Reds in Charleston until 1992, when the Florida Marlins were hired . In the middle of the 1993 season he moved to the Padres, where he played until 2008. In 2009 and 2010 he played as a relief pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers . In the 2010 season , however, he had to give up his position as Closer to John Axford. In early November 2010, the Brewers announced that they would not exercise an option to extend the contract by one year; this made Hoffman a free agent.

Hoffman is second on the all-time leaderboard with 601 saves . His 478th save on September 23, 2006 in a home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates let him draw level with the leading Lee Smith. Just one day later, on September 24, 2006, fittingly at the last home game of the regular season, Trevor Hoffman went down in history as the best closer of all time when, as the day before, he was 2-1 in the 9th inning without major problems secured the Padres' victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He reached his 500th Save on June 6, 2007; his 600th on September 7, 2010. On September 19, 2011, Mariano Rivera beat Hoffman's record with his 602nd save in the game against the Minnesota Twins.

The song Hell's Bells by AC / DC , which is played when he is substituted, has established itself as his unmistakable trademark . Hoffman's change-up pitch is one of the very best in the league. Despite his blown save in the All Star Game 2006, Hoffman has the reputation of being one of the best closers of all time, who could possibly only be compared with Mariano Rivera . As one of the few professional baseball pitcher, he not only manages to maintain his level in old age, despite the slowing throwing speed (from well over 90 mph to around 85 mph), but even to improve it again.

Private life

Hoffman is married and has three sons with his wife, Tracy.
