definition

A save is noted for a pitcher in the pitching stats area , the statistics used to record the performance of a pitcher, and must be credited by the official scorer . Along with the win , loss and ERA , it is one of the most important characteristics in statistics for pitchers. The save is a positive statistics category and can only be used by a substitute pitcherbe achieved. Only a pitcher who throws the pitch for the final "out" by his team can be awarded a save. If a team loses, there can be no save for any pitcher from this team. If the score is clear in favor of a team, a save cannot be achieved either, since it is assumed that such a game will be won even if the opponent still scores one or more runs . In addition to leading your own team, one of the following three situations applies as a criterion for a save:

  • A pitcher came on when his team was leading with three or fewer runs and the pitcher pitched at least one inning
  • A pitcher came off the bench, already placed than the opponent, the batter for a possible compensation either on base, at bat or on deck had
  • A pitcher has been substituted on and has pitched at least three full innings

A pitcher who is awarded the win for a game cannot be awarded a save at the same time. According to the criteria for a save, the starting pitcher can never receive a save, as he either achieves a win or a loss in a complete game .

If a team loses the lead in the game at a time when a save could be credited, this is called a blown save and the pitcher who allowed the run to equalize is charged with a BS in the statistics . Such a pitcher can still be awarded a win if his team still scores the winning point while he is the active pitcher according to the game sheet .
