Derek Sanderson Jeter (born June 26, 1974 in Pequannock , New Jersey ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB). His nickname is Mr. November . Derek Jeter is the first player to hit 3,000 hits in a Yankees uniform and the 28th in MLB history.
biography
Born in New Jersey, Jeter spent most of his youth in Kalamazoo , Michigan , playing basketball and baseball at Kalamazoo Central High School there . Such was his excellence as a baseball player that he was named High School Player of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1992. Despite receiving a baseball scholarship from the University of Michigan , the New York Yankees voted him sixth in the first round of this year's amateur draft .
Jeter made his debut in the Major Leagues on May 29, 1995. Jeter played in the position of shortstop , a position where many new, highly talented players appeared in his early years in the Major League ( Rey Ordonez with the New York Mets , Nomar Garciaparra with the Boston Red Sox , Alex Gonzalez with the Toronto Blue Jays , Alex Rodríguez with the Seattle Mariners and Edgar Rentería with the Florida Marlins ). In his second season, Jeters performed so well that he was named Rookie of the Year in the American League . In the same year he won his first title in the World Series with the Yankees. That season, Jeter had hit a controversial home run in the American League Championship Series against the Baltimore Orioles . Jeter's ball was caught in the field by 12-year-old spectator Jeffrey Maier and pulled into the audience area so that outfielder Tony Tarasco had no chance to catch the ball. This was the counterbalance in the game the Yankees won in extra time. He became the second shortstop rookie to hit a 3-run home run in the 1996 ALCS. The first to do that was Chris Speier in 1971 for the San Francisco Giants in NLCS.
From 1998 to 2000, three more World Series triumphs followed, adding to his six titles in the American League. He was also voted Most Valuable Player ( MVP ) of the 2000 World Series . Due to his achievements in the World Series, which was held for the first time in November because of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , Jeter came to his nickname Mr. November , based on Mr. October Reggie Jackson .
On June 3, 2003, Jeter was named the 11th captain in the history of the New York Yankees . In 2006, Jeter received the Hank Aaron Award for Best Hitter in the American League . In August 2008 he surpassed 2,500 hits in his career; He has also been the New York Yankees' most hit player since September 2009, when he surpassed Lou Gehrig's worth . In the same year he was selected by the magazine Sports Illustrated for Athlete of the Year chosen.
He is now one of the 50 players with the most hits in the history of the Major League and, after the retirement of Ken Griffey junior, also has the most hits of all active players.
Jeter also made a cameo on the 2010 comedy The Somewhat Different Cops
On July 9, 2011 in the game against Tampa Bay Rays , Jeter made his 3,000th hit with a home run.
Jeter's activities for various charities are also noteworthy. Among other things, he founded an organization called Turn 2 Foundation with his younger sister Sharlee in 1996 , which supports children and young people with problems with alcohol and other drugs .
On February 12, 2014, Derek Jeter surprisingly announced that the 2014 game year would be his final season in professional baseball.
