George Kenneth "Ken" Griffey junior (born November 21, 1969 in Donora , Pennsylvania ) is a retired American baseball player . He played in Major League Baseball for over 21 years and was one of the most successful players, especially in the 1990s.

Career

Griffey began his MLB career in 1989 with the Seattle Mariners in the American League , a team that had only been founded in 1977 and had previously had little success. Thanks also to Griffey's achievements as a batter, the Mariners became a relatively strong team in the 1990s, winning the title in the West Division in 1995 and 1997. Four times he achieved an OPS value ( OBP plus SLG ) of more than 1,000 as a batsman.

His outstanding achievements led to numerous honors, from 1990 he won the Gold Glove every year for outstanding defensive performance and was also appointed to the All-Star Team of the American League every year . In 1997 he was also recognized as the best actor ( MVP ) of the AL.

In 2000, he moved to the Cincinnati Reds in the National League and thus to the city where he grew up. His performances remained good, but were no longer as outstanding as in Seattle. Griffey also had to struggle with injuries at times. In 2005, however, he was named MLB Comeback Player of the Year in the National League.

During the 2008 season, Griffey moved to the Chicago White Sox for 41 missions in order to strengthen them for the upcoming play-offs. For the 2009 season he returned to the Seattle Mariners after nine years and was there in 33 games in 2010. He ended his career on June 2, 2010.

His total of 630 home runs hit correspond to the fifth best performance of all players in MLB history. This made him the most successful still active player before his retirement. His other achievements include 9,801 at-bats and 1,779 strike-outs at 1,312 walks.

On January 6, 2016, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame , having previously received 99.32% of the vote, breaking the record of pitcher Tom Seaver who previously received 98.84% of the vote.

Video games

Because of its popularity, Nintendo produced a series of baseball video games in the 1990s that advertised Griffey's name. Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball was released for the Super Nintendo system in 1994 and for the Game Boy in 1997. In 1996, Rare produced Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run for the Super Nintendo system . Major League Baseball Featuring Ken Griffey, Jr. for the Nintendo 64 , the series completed in 1998.
