Giancarlo Cruz-Michael Stanton (* 8. November 1989 in Panorama City , Los Angeles , California ) (in the seasons 2010 and 2011 he played under the name of Michael Stanton ) is a since June 8 2010 American professional baseball player in the Major League Baseball .

He played his first game for the Miami Marlins on June 8, 2010 (at that time under the club name Florida Marlins ).

Stanton is of Irish, African American and Puerto Rican descent.

On September 11, 2014, during the Marlins game against the Milwaukee Brewers , he suffered serious facial injuries when a 142 km / h (approx. 88 mph) fastball hit him in the face by pitcher Mike Fiers . Stanton suffered numerous facial fractures and damage to his teeth.

On November 17, 2014, his club, the Miami Marlins and Stanton signed a 13-year contract for the sum of 325 million US dollars. This contract is the highest in baseball history.

In the 2017 season, Stanton hit 59 home runs for the Marlins. He was the first player since 2001 to do so in Major League Baseball .

On December 11, 2017, Stanton was traded from the Miami Marlins to the New York Yankees.
