Cabrera playing in the 2007 Florida Marlins

José Miguel Torres Cabrera (born April 18, 1983 in Maracay , Aragua , Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan baseball player in Major League Baseball .

Miguel Cabrera came out of the farm system of the Florida Marlins , which him on 2 July 1999 as a free agent committed, and played at the start of the 2003 season, still with the Double-A Carolina Mudcats . In June 2003 he was appointed as the second youngest player of the Marlins after Edgar Rentería in the squad of the Major League and won the World Series in his debut year . He was elected to the All-Star team four times from 2004 to 2007 . On the defensive he has played in various positions, left field , right field , third base and most recently with his current team, the Detroit Tigers , as first baseman . His offensive statistics at the age of 25 years can be with those of Hank Aaron and Jr. Ken Griffey compare.

Florida Marlins 2003 to 2007

In his first game for the Marlins, Cabrera managed a walk-off home run . It was only the third time since 1900 that a player made his home run home run victory. Florida's manager Jack McKeon put him in fourth place in the line-up as a clean-up batter and Cabrera played one of the best seasons of a newcomer ever. His performance in the play-offs contributed significantly to winning the 2003 World Series . In game four against the New York Yankees , Roger Clemens hit him with an inside fastball , two pitches after that Cabrera hit a home run over right field . Cabrera finished his first season with a batting average of .268, 12 home runs , 62 RBI and 39 runs . In the next season he seamlessly continued his performance of the previous year and played after .294 with 33 home runs, 112 RBI and 101 runs for the first time in the all-star game . On the defensive, Cabrera was used in positions in the outfield. In a strong line-up with Luis Castillo , Jeff Conine , Carlos Delgado , Alex González and Mike Lowell , he stood out again with .323, 33 home runs and 116 RBI and became the youngest player in the MLB, more than two seasons in a row Get 30 home runs. Cabrera was again represented in the All-Star team, and he also won a Silver Slugger Award . In the 2006 season, Cabrera was one of the key players in the Marlins after they had given up numerous well-known players before the season and added young talents to the roster. Thanks to the strength of the new with Hanley Ramirez and Dan Uggla before, as well as Josh Willingham after him in the line-up , he scored a batting average of .339, hit 26 home runs and 114 RBI. Again he played for the All-Stars and received a Silver Slugger. The honor of the best battery was withheld, however, here Freddy Sanchez of the Pittsburgh Pirates was ahead with .344. 2006 was the first year in which Cabrera played not in the outfield , but third base , after the previous regular third baseman , Mike Lowell, joined the Boston Red Sox with Josh Beckett against, among others, Ramírez and Aníbal Sánchez . It is worth mentioning an at-bat Cabreras, in which he was deliberately brought to base with a walk to avoid his dreaded punch, but Cabrera hit the ball thrown sideways and brought him decisively into the lead. His move on the defensive to the Hot Corner also brought criticism to Cabrera, as he showed some uncertainty and made several game-critical errors , including in the All-Star Game and also in a game of the Marlins, which then led to an argument between the marlin pitcher Scott Olsen , who accused him of lack of commitment, and Cabrera came.

Because of his achievements, Cabrera got a lucrative one-year contract after the arbitration hearing , a kind of neutral arbitration committee in case of stalled contract negotiations. During the 2007 season, Cabrera was voted Player of the Week twice, for the fourth time in a row in the All-Star Team of the National League . In the course of the season he managed his RBI number 500, after Mel Ott and Ted Williams as the third youngest player. Shortly before the first Grand Slam of his career on September 15, 2007 against the Colorado Rockies , he made the 100th RBI of the season as the only player alongside David Ortiz , Alex Rodríguez , Albert Pujols and Vladimir Guerrero, this limit in the first four of his seasons . His most impressive stats for 2007 are the batting average of .320, 34 home runs, 119 RBI and a .401 on-base percentage .

Detroit Tigers 2008 to date

Miguel Cabrera was due to financial restrictions at the Florida Marlins in December 2007 together with pitcher Dontrelle Willis against the young players Andrew Miller , Dallas Trahern , Eulogio de la Cruz , Burke Badenhop , Cameron Maybin and Mike Rabelo to the Detroit Tigers . In Detroit, he received the fourth highest-value contract in MLB history. Cabrera made his debut for the Tigers as third baseman on March 31, 2008. Although he hit a home run on his third at-bat for Detroit, he had difficulty getting used to the new environment. He made more errors than usual and was then used as first baseman . This was one of the reasons why he was not called to the All-Star Team for the first time. After the All-Star Game, Cabrera regained strength and was named Player of the Month for July after eight home runs and a .330 batting average . He finished the season with new personal records for home runs (37) and RBI (127), making him the second youngest home run champion in the American League after Troy Glaus .

In 2012, Cabrera won the Triple Crown . The highest average (AVG), most home runs and most RBI apply here. The last to succeed was Carl Yastrzemski for the Boston Red Sox in 1967. This ended the longest dry spell in this rating, which has been recorded since 1920. In the last game of the season, however, he was replaced prematurely after he was already on the beat twice (fly-out, strike-out) and his AVG average dropped to 33%. This season he was also able to win the most bases (377), extra base hits (84), go-ahead RBI (34), grounding into double plays (28) and multiple hit games (64). He shares the latter category with Derek Jeter . His AVG was only the best in the AL, however, so he missed the Major League Triple Crown. He was also involved in 139 of 726 runs (19.15%). That's the highest percentage of any single player since 1920 (when RBI was introduced). In 1970, Johnny Bench was involved in 148 of 775 runs for the Cincinnati Reds (19.1%).

Private

Cabrera professes Christianity, but has also been a priest of the Santería since 2006 . He is married and has a daughter with his wife Rosangel, also named Rosangel. In winter, Cabrera lives in Venezuela, in the United States he lives in Birmingham , Michigan .
