Hanley Ramírez (born December 23, 1983 in Samaná , Dominican Republic ) is a Dominican baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) on the position of the short stop . Ramírez began playing baseball as a child in his native Samaná. There he was discovered by player scouts Levy Ochoa and Julian Camilo and signed by the Boston Red Sox in 2005 . He was signed for the 2006 season together with Aníbal Sánchez , Jesús Delgado and Harvey García in exchange for Josh Beckett , Guillermo Mota and Mike Lowell of the Florida Marlins .

2006 season

Ramírez was used in 2006 in the newly formed team of Marlins on the position of the shortstops . He had an outstanding season and was awarded NL Rookie of the Year after topping the rookie stats with 185 hits, 119 runs , 11 triples and 51 stolen bases . He also broke some historical records and is, among others, the fifth player in the MLB alongside the great baseball players Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker with 45 doubles and more than 50 stolen bases in one season.

2007 season

Even in his second year with the Marlins, he continued his strong performance on the offensive. Before the All-Star election, he had a batting average of .331, plus 35 RBIs and 14 home runs . Despite these achievements, he was not considered for the All-Star Game . Ramírez is a typical lead-off hitter because of his speed , but according to many experts he also has the potential to beat number three or four in the batting order . In July 2007, he dislocated his left shoulder while attempting to strike , an injury he had sustained a number of times after an unfortunate fall in winter baseball in the Dominican Republic. Nevertheless, he was soon reinstated. Throughout the season, he posted a batting average of .332, 29 home runs, 81 RBIs, 125 runs and 51 stolen bases. He was only missing one home run to become the third player in MLB history with more than 30 home runs and 50 stolen bases. When choosing the MVP , he made it into the top ten. After the season, Ramírez underwent surgery on his injured shoulder.

2008 season

The Florida Marlins signed the most valuable contract in the club's history before the 2008 season with Ramírez, after two key players had been given up again with Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis . With consistently good performances he recommended himself again for the All-Star-Game and was chosen in a close decision. In the last All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium , he hit two hits in three at-bats and scored one run. He was named Player of the Month for the National League in June 2008 after returning to top the stats in many areas. His achievements up to that point promised a 40-40 season, a season with 40 or more home runs and stolen bases. Even if it was "only" enough for the 30-30 season in the end, Ramírez joined an exclusive club of players. When he was elected MVP in 2008, he was eleventh. He also received a Silver Slugger Award .

2009 season

Prior to the start of the 2009 season, Ramírez played for the Dominican Republic at the 2009 World Baseball Classic . In the regular season he succeeded on April 6, 2009 in a game against the Washington Nationals, the first Grand Slam home run of his career. In the middle of the season he was appointed to the NL All-Star Team for the second time. On September 6th, he hit his 100th home run. He led the National League with a batting average of .342. He received a Silver Slugger Award and was in second place behind Albert Pujols in the vote on the NL MVP .

2010 season

In the 2010 season, Ramírez was elected to the NL All-Star Team for the third time in a row. He also took part in the Home Run Derby during All-Star Week, finishing second behind David Ortiz . On August 7, he hit the first walk-off home run of his career in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals . On September 15, he suffered an elbow injury in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies that ended his season. For 2010, he had a batting average of .300 on 21 home runs, 76 RBIs, 32 stolen bases and 92 runs.

Private

Ramírez is married and has two sons with his wife Elisabeth, Hanley Ramírez Jr. (* 2004) and Hansel (* 2007).
