Aníbal Alejandro Sánchez, Jr. (born February 27, 1984 in Maracay , Venezuela ) is a Venezuelan baseball player in the MLB .

Career

Sánchez was signed as a free agent by the Boston Red Sox at the age of 17 . He played for the Red Sox in the Venezuelan Summer League for two years , then had elbow surgery and a year later returned to a Red Sox farm team . After his first season in an American league, he was named the fifth best young player in the United States after Hanley Ramírez , Brandon Moss , Jonathan Papelbon and Jon Lester . Until the end of the 2005 season, Sánchez remained in the Red Sox's farm system and was signed for the 2006 season together with Hanley Ramírez, Jesús Delgado and Harvey García in exchange for Josh Beckett , Guillermo Mota and Mike Lowell of the Florida Marlins . In the course of the 2006 season Sánchez initially played for the Carolina Mudcats , but finally made his debut in the MLB on June 25, 2006. With good performances he could have a place in the starting rotation of the Marlins secure, among other things, he defeated the New York Yankees with Roger Clemens . On September 6, 2006, Sánchez managed a no-hitter in the 2–0 victory of the Florida Marlins at the Arizona Diamondbacks . This no-hitter was special because there were six newcomers ( rookies ) on the field for the Marlins in this game , more than any other no-hitter before. Sánchez was only the 19th newcomer to a no-hitter since 1900, and it was only the fourth in the history of the Florida Marlins after Al Leiter , Kevin Brown and AJ Burnett . He was also the second Venezuelan to do this feat.

In the preparation for the 2007 season, Sánchez injured his shoulder. He still played a few games, but could not build on the performance of the previous season. After being transferred to the Albuquerque Isotopes - then part of the Marlins' organization - to improve his form in May , he finally had to undergo another operation in June. After a long convalescence he started on July 31, 2008 for the first time in an MLB game with a win against the Colorado Rockies . He stayed in the starting rotation until the end of the season .

In spring training 2009, Sánchez secured one of the five positions as starting pitcher and achieved four wins in the season with eight defeats and an ERA of 3.87. He pitched a total of only 86 innings in 16 games due to a repeated shoulder injury. In winter 2009/2010 he was able to train injury-free for the first time since 2006 and came back to the starting rotation of the Marlins for the 2010 season .

In the season 2019 he won with the Washington Nationals , the World Series in 2019 after the team in seven games against the Houston Astros had prevailed.
