The second World Baseball Classic took place between March 5th and 23rd, 2009. The group matches were played in Tokyo, México DF, Toronto and San Juan, the second round matches in Miami and San Diego, the final venue was Los Angeles. Defending champion Japan won the tournament against Olympic champions South Korea 5: 3 after 10 innings, i.e. H. after an extension.
The Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament for the second time since 2006 .
Participants and tournament mode
The 16 participating nations are the same as in the first World Baseball Classic 2006, which again go into the first tournament phase in four groups. However, the mode of the group stage has been changed: Rounds 1 and 2 are played in double elimination mode :
- The winners of the opening games play against each other. The winner of this game is already qualified for the second round.
- The losers in the opening games play a knockout game. The winner plays the second place in the second round against the loser of the other game.
- The two qualified teams play a placement game, which is important for the classification in the next tournament round.

Final round
In the final round at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on March 21 and 22, the first and second placed players from round 2 played the semi-finals; in contrast to 2006 crosswise. The winners played the final on March 23rd.

Exhibition Games
Between February 28 and March 12, between the actual tournament games, test matches between the national teams and club teams from the major league and the Japanese professional league took place. They were held in the Tokyo Dome and smaller stadiums in the United States.
