Participants and tournament mode

The total field of participants includes 16 nations. Based on their placement at the 2013 World Baseball Classic , 12 countries are directly qualified for the finals. These are Canada , China , Taiwan , the Dominican Republic , Italy , Japan , Cuba , Netherlands , Puerto Rico , South Korea , USA and Venezuela . The 4 winners of the qualifying tournaments Australia , Mexico , Colombia and Israel complete the 16-country field of participants in the final round of the WBC 2017.

The following game mode has been agreed for the World Baseball Classic 2017:

• In round 1, 16 teams play in four groups (A to D) in a round robin system , i.e. everyone against everyone, no series, just one game.
• In round 2 the best 2 teams from each group play against each other in two groups (E and F)
• The two best teams in both groups play against each other in the semi-finals (first against second) and the final
