Carl Michael Yastrzemski (born August 22, 1939 in Southampton , Long Island , New York ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball . His nickname is Yaz .

biography

Carl Yastrzemski played his entire career with the Boston Red Sox . He made his debut in the American League on April 11, 1961. He replaced Ted Williams as leftfielder . Later in his career, he was also used as a first baseman and designated hitter . Before his baseball career, Yastrzemski had attended the University of Notre Dame .

His first two years were unspectacular. In his third season in 1963 he then led the American League with a batting average of 32.1%. He also performed in doubles and walks . In 1967 he had his best season. He won the Triple Crown for batsmen. With his batting average of 32.6%, 44  home runs and 121 RBI, he led the league. He had to share the home run title with Harmon Killebrew . Until the 2005 season he was the last batsman to succeed. He was also elected MVP of the American League. He was also honored with the Associated Press Athlete of the Year award .

1967 was considered the year of the Boston Red Sox's Impossible Dream . In 1966 they finished the season in ninth place and did not have high hopes for improvement for themselves or their fans. But contrary to expectations, the Red Sox were able to win the title in the American League. Yastrzemski contributed significantly to this. In the last fortnight of the season he scored 23 base hits in 44 punch appearances with 5 home runs, 14 runs and 16 RBI. So the Red Sox won the AL before the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers . In the World Series , the Red Sox met the St. Louis Cardinals . Despite three home runs and a batting average of 40% from Yastrzemski, Boston lost in seven games. Bob Gibson , the Cardinals pitcher , had three wins in the series alone. Yastrzemski end of 1967 was by the magazine Sports Illustrated for Athlete of the Year chosen.

In 1968 Yastrzemski won again the hit title with an average of 30.1%, the lowest value with which this title was won. The reason for this was the relief granted to the throwers. The year 1968 was therefore also called The Year of the Pitcher .

In 1975 he reached the World Series again with his team. In the American League Championship Series, the Red Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics in three games, with Yastrzemski posting a batting average of 45.5%. In the World Series, the Cincinnati Reds were the opponent. This series also went over a distance of seven games. Yastrzemski was the last batsman to hit the mark in this series. With his flight, the Reds secured the title. Also in the playoff against the New York Yankees Yastrzemski was the last out of his team.

He played his last game on October 2, 1983 at Fenway Park against the Cleveland Indians . No player had played for the same team longer. With 3308 games, it is in second place on the all-time leaderboard. He was the first player to make 3,000 basehits and 400 home runs only in the American League. He took part in the All-Star Game 18 times and won seven Gold Glove Awards .

In 1989, he was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame in the first year of his eligibility . Since this year, his number 8 is no longer awarded by the Red Sox.
