In December 2004, Rentería signed a four-year deal with the Boston Red Sox for $ 40 million. However, the 2005 season was very disappointing for him. He made a record 30 mistakes. In addition to defensive weaknesses, he scored 100 runs in one season for the first time. In the American League Division Series he was defeated with the Red Sox to the Chicago White Sox , which subsequently won the World Series.

After the 2005 season, Rentería was traded to the Atlanta Braves . The following season he made only 13 mistakes, the batting average was .293 and he scored 14 home runs and 70 batted in runs . The 2007 season started extremely successfully and he was long on the way to reaching over 200 hits. On August 2nd, however, he sprained his ankle and was temporarily placed on the “disabled list”. This ruined his chance of scoring over 200 hits.

On October 29, 2007, Rentería was traded to the Detroit Tigers . However, the 2008 season was very disappointing for him and the Tigers and so his option for the 2009 season was not taken.

On December 4, 2008, Rentería signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants for 18.5 million US dollars with an option for the 2011 season. The 2010 season he started with the excellent quota of 11 hits in the first 19 “at-bats”. Due to various injuries, however, he was only able to complete a total of 72 games this season. However, he reached the 2010 World Series with the Giants , which they won 4-1 against the Texas Rangers . In the fifth game, he scored a game-winning home run with 3 runs. The game eventually ended 3-1 for the Giants. Subsequently, Rentería was also voted MVP of the World Series . On November 5, 2010, the Giants decided not to exercise the option for the 2011 season. However, Rentería announced that they would still want to play in the 2011 season. The Giants offered a one-year contract for one million US dollars, but he turned it down.

On January 7, 2011, Rentería finally signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds for $ 2.1 million plus a $ 0.9 million performance bonus. He started the season as a substitute as Paul Janish started the season as a shortstop.
