The 2003 World Series marks the 100th anniversary of the modern World Series. Because of the players' strike in 1994, the 2004 World Series was the 99th edition of the Major League Baseball finals . The series started on October 18, 2003 and ended on October 25, 2003. It faced the champion of the American League , the New York Yankees , and the champion of the National League , the Florida Marlins . The Florida Marlins won the "Best of Seven" series with a 4-2 win. The Marlins won Games 1, 4, 5 and 6, the Yankees won Games 2 and 3.
It was the sixth participation for the defeated Yankees in the last eight years. For the victorious Marlins, who were able to qualify for the playoffs with a wildcard , it was the second participation in a World Series in their 11-year history. The Marlins first participated in 1997, when the Florida team also won.
