The 1979 World Series was the 76th edition of the Major League Baseball finals . The champions of the American League , the Baltimore Orioles , and the champion of the National League , the Pittsburgh Pirates , faced each other. The best-of-seven series started on October 10th and ended on October 17th, 1979. Winner after seven games were the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3, who could win their fifth World Series .

As MVP of the series Pittsburgh was first baseman Darrell Porter excellent. At the age of 39, he is the oldest player to be voted MVP of the World Series.
