action

The "Supercops" Highsmith and Danson of the NYPD solve all their cases with excessive firearm use, causing huge collateral damage in the process . Nevertheless, they are celebrated as heroes and always find colleagues who do the "paperwork" for them. Detective Allen Gamble is one of them. He is an expert in white-collar crime and rejects all assignments that go beyond the back office. His partner Detective Terry Hoitz was transferred to him after he accidentally shot baseball player Derek Jeter . The two clash again and again because Hoitz is more of the rough cop who would do anything to finally make a name for himself and Gamble is nice and friendly to everyone while they only make fun of him. After Gamble is seduced by colleagues into using firearms in the course of an alleged initiation rite in the office, Gamble's boss retracts his weapon and instead hands him a wooden dummy.

When Highsmith and Danson die in a mission because of their extreme overconfidence, Hoitz is determined to take their place. In fact, he can persuade Gamble to go out into the field, as the latter is investigating financial investor Sir David Ershon because of minor details of building law. But he has much bigger problems and is downright delighted to be arrested by Gamble and Hoitz. Shortly afterwards, however, the two are attacked and Ershon "kidnapped" by strangers.

Slowly the two realize that they are on to something bigger. But neither their captain nor their lawyer Beaman want to believe them, also because failures put obstacles in their way. Beaman commits suicide shortly afterwards because of threats. In the course of the plot it also turns out that Gamble is extremely popular with women and worked as a pimp while studying , but then renounced violence. Gamble and Hoitz find out that Ershon is being forced into illegal transactions by backers that are said to be at the expense of the NYPD's pension fund .

In the end, the two Ershon have to protect Ershon from his pursuers for a night so that he can stop the crucial money transfer the next morning. Roger Wesley, who was supposed to oversee the crooked business on behalf of Ershon's boss, wants to make sure that the transfer is carried out. There is a big shootout in the course of which Gamble and Hoitz are shot, but survive. They are ultimately respected by their captain, although not celebrated as heroes, but according to the spokesman, they are not who do the real work anyway. It's the cops who work hard all the time, "You know, the slightly different cops".
