history

The song was written and produced by Marqueze Etheridge, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Organized Noize .

The background is an incident from 1994. Lisa Lopes had lived with the football player Andre Rison since 1993 in a relationship that was marked by violence by Andre Rison and alcohol abuse by Lisa Lopes. On the night of June 8, 1994, Andre Rison went out clubbing and didn't come home until 5:00 a.m. the next day, where he was met by the irritable and drunk Lisa Lopes at the driveway of his million dollar property, which he met accused of only taking care of himself. He would have bought several pairs of sneakers for himself without thinking about them. There was an argument between the two, in which Rison beat Lopes, dragged him into the house, threw him on the bed and sat on her. After he calmed down, he left the house. Lopes then took the sneakers, threw them into the bathtub and lit the sneakers. Then she picked up the vacuum cleaner and smashed the windshields of two luxury Rison cars. Shortly afterwards the whole house was on fire.

On June 10, Lisa Lopes surrendered to the police, who arrested her for arson. She was released on bail of $ 75,000 and underwent alcohol withdrawal treatment 5 days later. She was sentenced to an assisted residence and fined $ 10,000 for arson.

In 2007 Paul McCartney said in an interview: TLC had taken over parts of its text and its melody from the chorus from his piece Waterfalls in slightly modified form for their chorus , which is also true.

The song deals with gang crime and murder in the first verse , unprotected sex, HIV and AIDS in the second and cocaine addiction in the third .
