Wir sind die Millers (Original title We're the Millers ) is an American comedy film directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber from 2013 . Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston can be seen in the leading roles . The film celebrated its world premiere on August 1, 2013 at New York's Ziegfeld Theater .

action

After David Clark, a small drug dealer, has money and goods stolen, he is unable to pay the debt to his supplier Brad Gurdlinger. Brad forces him to get into the big drug business: David is supposed to smuggle marijuana from Mexico into the United States; his debts were paid for it and he also would get 100,000 dollars . In order not to attract attention when he re-entered the USA, he hires his neighbor Rose, who works as a stripper , the brazen young runaway Casey and the shy 18-year-old son Kenny. Together they are supposed to play a family who travels to Mexico to camp, namely the Millers.

In Mexico, David learns that the smuggling is an enormous amount of cannabis and that the entire motorhome is fully loaded with it. A Mexican policeman stopped them at the start of their return journey. He immediately recognized the smugglers' plan, but allowed them to continue driving in return for a bribe. Even when entering the United States, the Millers are lucky at the last second and can continue their motorhome. Soon after, however, the team had to stop because of a breakdown. The vacationing family Fitzgerald, consisting of Don, Edie and their daughter Melissa, show themselves to be helpful and ignorantly tow the motor home, which is loaded with drugs. On the way to the next workshop it turns out that Don Fitzgerald is a DEA drug investigator who has been withdrawn from the field service due to a lack of assertiveness. For now, the Millers can keep their cover.

It is revealed that Gurdlinger is by no means the buyer of the smuggled drugs, but that the Millers unwittingly stole them. Hence the Millers and the Fitzgeralds are ambushed by the real owners; the Millers' camouflage is exposed. After a scuffle, the gangsters can be overpowered and arrested by Don; towards the Millers he closes both eyes and lets them go.

After David delivered the goods to Gurdlinger, Gurdlinger refused to pay him the delivery fee of $ 500,000 that had been promised by telephone and even confirmed David's accusation that he had never intended to pay him for the smuggling. Suddenly a heavily armed DEA special task force under the direction of the authorities rehabilitated Don storms the building and arrests Gurdlinger. Don explains to David that he and the rest of the Millers will be accepted into the witness protection program. The film ends with the Millers, who have actually become a happy family, in a wonderful home with cannabis bushes in the well-tended garden.

Reviews

We are the Millers is more fun than you might think at first. The actors and the rough jokes are relatively well tailored to each other and the scriptwriters do not skimp on moments of strange shame - especially with the character Kenny - and funny, politically incorrect sayings that certainly led to loud laughter from the reviewer. The comedy is not the big hit, but it is one of the better American representatives this year. "

- Adam Arndt, serienjunkies.de

We're the Millers is wonderful, humorous entertainment that is definitely worth going to the cinema. The story is nice, the character constellation unusual and the cast excellent. Most of the quite innovative gags ignite and the end knows how to convince. Anyone who likes comedies of the somewhat tougher pace and laughed tears at Kill the Boss or Hangover is more than well advised to go to the cinema to We are the Millers . "

- Mario von Czapiewski, filmfutter.com

“Director Rawson Marshall Thurber (' Full on the nuts ') combines shoddy Farrelly-style gags - the bite of a tarantula makes Kenny's testicles swell to the size of an orange - with puns and situational comedy. But the film is never amused at the expense of its characters. There is enough time between the well-placed punchlines for the characters to develop lovingly. And it will come as no surprise that this thrown together bunch cannot avoid developing a real sense of family on his crazy road trip. Conclusion: Even sober viewers enjoy the turbulence of this drug deal with a blissful grin. "

“Likewise cobbled together, but amazingly funny comedy that shoots a forced gag fireworks. Even if the jokes are often below the belt, the charming message of cohesion against the chromosome set is convincing. "

Trivia

  • The credits show an outtake of the scene in which the TLC song Waterfalls is on the radio. Instead of the TLC song, however, to the surprise of Jennifer Aniston, the song I'll be there for you by the band The Rembrandts plays , in which the three other leading actors join in. This is the theme song of the successful US sitcom Friends , in which Aniston played.
  • In the scene at the border, an orange VW Bulli T2 with a Wolfsburg license plate can be seen in front of the mobile home .
  • Casey's last name (Emma Roberts) is spelled “Mathis” in the credits. However, in the airport scene you can see her driver's license, which clearly says "Matthis". You can also read “Rose O'Reilly” in the credits. The first name "Sarah" is mentioned in the caravan scene at the festival.
  • Filming locations were North Carolina and New Mexico in the United States.
  • The production cost was $ 37 million. The film grossed around $ 270 million worldwide, including $ 150.4 million in the US alone.
