Ziegfeld Theater (cinema)

The Ziegfeld Theater is a historic cinema in New York City . It was built in 1969 as a classic movie palace, one of the last of its kind in the United States , and is the last movie theater with a single large movie theater still operating in Manhattan . It is located at the address 141 West 54th Street, only a few hundred meters from the spot where the 1966 demolished Broadway - theater of the same name was located.

The cinema has 1,131 seats, 306 of which are on the balcony in the rear area. Outwardly rather unimpressive, the cinema inside is sumptuously decorated with red carpets and velvet coverings, crystal - chandeliers and gold ornaments equipped. The hallway walls are decorated with old photos of movie stars. Architects were Emery Roth & Sons , designer was Irving Gershon. The interior design was done by the theater set designer John McNamara. In the late 1990s, the Ziegfeld Theater was extensively renovated and digitized after the turn of the millennium . In 2008 the Film Society of Lincoln Center used the Cinema Palace to host the New York Film Festival . To this day, world premieres with international press receptions of American films take place here, for example in December 2008 of Der Vorleser with Kate Winslet , David Kross and Ralph Fiennes . Since 2010, the Ziegfeld Theater for the New York theater chain Clearview Cinemas, a subsidiary of the media company is part of Cablevision .

The imminent closure was announced on January 20, 2016. The cinema closed eight days later. The last film that was shown there was Star Wars: The Force Awakens . From 2017 the cinema is to be replaced by the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
