Emery Roth
Emery Roth (* 1871 in Sečovce , Austria-Hungary , today Slovakia , as Róth Imre ; † August 20, 1948 ) was an American architect who designed numerous apartment buildings in New York , especially in the twenties and thirties . The company was continued under the name Emery Roth & Sons under his sons and developed into one of the most influential American architectural firms in the 1950s to 1980s.
biography
Roth was born into a Hungarian Jewish family. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 13 after his family became impoverished due to his father's death. He began his architectural training in Chicago as a draftsman in the Burnham & Root office . There he also met the architect Richard Morris Hunt , who was impressed by his qualities and invited him to work for him in his New York office. After Hunt's untimely death in 1895, Roth joined the office of Ogden Codman, Jr. , a designer and decorator who was working for wealthy Newport clients at the time . However, just three years later, Roth set up his own company in New York. In the interwar period, Emery Roth's office provided some of the most notable examples of apartment buildings in the Beaux Arts style that was popular at the time , particularly in Manhattan . In 1938 Roth took his sons Julian and Richard into his office as partners.
Emery Roth & Sons
In 1947, a year before his death, Roth changed the name of his office to Emery Roth & Sons. After his death Richard Roth took over the management. Under his leadership, the office expanded considerably, with the main focus now being on the construction of office buildings. In the 50s and 60s, Emery Roth & Sons was responsible for dozens of high-rise office buildings, which were built from around 1955, mainly using glass facades , in line with the changed zeitgeist . Since the 1960s, the company has also been involved as executive architects in the planning and construction of major projects, such as B. the Pan Am Building and the World Trade Center , both in New York.
In 1996 the company went out of business after almost 100 years, apparently due to financial problems.
