John Walter Scott (born November 2, 1845 in London , † January 4, 1919 in New York , United States ) was an American stamp dealer, stamp auctioneer and publisher. He was called the "father of American philately ".

Life

Scott began collecting stamps at the age of nine. After trading postage stamps in London, he emigrated to America in 1863 and became an American citizen that same year. At first he was a brand dealer again in New York, only to take part in the California gold rush in 1865 . After he had no success there with the prospecting trade, he returned to New York after two years to trade in stamps again. Over the next two decades, he became the country's leading stamp dealer.

From 1868 he was editor of the "American Journal of Philately", the first major trade magazine for postage stamps in the USA. His first Scott catalog was also published in 1868 . This catalog is now the most important American stamp catalog. He also brought out other collector's magazines, including "The Metropolitan Philatelist", the "JW Scott & Co., Ltd." Weekly News Letter ”and the“ Coin Collector's Journal ”.

On May 28, 1870, he held the world's first stamp auction. Two years later he opened a branch in London, where he held his fifth auction. This auction on March 18, 1872 was the first stamp auction in Europe. In 1885 he sold the company name, catalog and inventory to the Calman Brothers. Scott lost his fortune a short time later through speculation and then returned to business under his own name. The Calman brothers sued but lost the case.

Scott also organized stamp exhibitions. His son Walter Stone Scott (1871-1948) was also auctioneer for postage stamps and postal history.
