Vice - The Second Man (Original Title Vice ) is a satirical biography by Adam McKay and tells the life story of former US Vice President Dick Cheney . The film was released in US cinemas on December 25, 2018 and in German cinemas on February 21, 2019.

At the 2019 Academy Awards , Vice was nominated in eight categories, including Best Picture and McKay for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. It won in the Best Make-up and Best Hairstyles category .

action

At the beginning of the film, Dick Cheney and White House staff are shown during the crisis intervention shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . Until further notice, he issues a kill order for every suspicious aircraft. The action then jumps back to 1963. Cheney loses his Yale scholarship because of alcoholism . He returns to his native Wyoming , where he continues to indulge in alcohol and lay power lines. After being picked up twice by the police for being drunk driving, his future power-hungry wife Lynne gives him an ultimatum.

In 1968, Cheney got his drinking problems under control and started a family with Lynne. He is doing an internship in the congress . Impressed by a speech by Donald Rumsfeld , he spontaneously decides to work for the Republican politician who is an economic advisor under President Richard Nixon . Rumsfeld, called "Rummy", vouches for Cheney's alcohol rides. He humbly serves him and receives his first own, windowless office. Cheney learns from Rumsfeld that Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger are having a secret conversation about the bombing of Cambodia . Kissinger is later shot down by Rumsfeld and Cheney.

In 1973 Cheney worked as a political advisor for a finance firm, had his own house in Bethesda, Maryland and two daughters, Lynne. When the rough Rumsfeld is excluded from Nixon's circle of power, he recruits Cheney as a shrewd political advisor in Washington DC The family experiences a stroke of fate when Lynne's mother drowns in a lake under mysterious circumstances. After Nixon's resignation, Rumsfeld gained new influence as Secretary of Defense under President Gerald Ford , and Cheney was appointed the youngest Chief of Staff of the White House . He is by the distinguished jurists Antonin Scalia with the "theory of the unitary executive power" ( Unitary executive theory familiar).

After Ford lost the presidential election to Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter , Cheney fought for a seat in the House of Representatives in his home state of Wyoming in 1978 . When he suffers his first of several heart attacks in a public speech, Lynne takes over the election campaign for him. Cheney wins the election and becomes one of the most influential politicians of the 1980s following Carter's defeat by Ronald Reagan . At the same time, Lynne, who has worked as a journalist and book author, becomes chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities . The US government neglects issues such as abortion, civil rights and environmental protection. The revocation of the fairness doctrine during this time ensures the rise of the conservative news channel Fox .

Cheney is promoted to Secretary of Defense under Republican President George Bush . But he gives up a planned candidacy for the presidency after he learns that his daughter Mary is a lesbian and does not want to drag her into the public eye. After the election of Democrat Bill Clinton , the Cheneys retreat to their Virginia country estate . When the naive George W. Bush plans to run for president, Cheney, the CEO of Halliburton, is traded as a possible vice president. Against Lynne's wishes, who regards the position as "useless", he accepts the offer. With the help of Antonin Scalia, who has now been appointed to the Supreme Court , Bush wins a close election against Al Gore .

Cheney is granted full access to the Oval Office as Vice President , while Rumsfeld becomes Secretary of Defense again. Cheney soon controls administration, military, energy and foreign policy and has its own offices in the House of Representatives, the Pentagon and the CIA . In addition to the attacks on September 11, 2001, his reign included tax breaks for the super-rich, secret meetings with energy companies, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq , his former employer Halliburton's involvement in it, the Plame affair , the rise of the terrorist Abū Musʿab az- Zarqāwī ( al-Qaeda in Iraq ) as well as the use of torture methods by the CIA, for which John Yoo creates legal conditions. Rumsfeld is subsequently shot.

After the election of the Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama , Cheney's health was in poor health. He withdraws from the public eye and is afraid of legal consequences. He will have a new heart implanted in 2012. The donor is the American soldier and family man Kurt, who died in a traffic accident, who served in Afghanistan and Iraq and who also acts as the film's narrator. Cheney's daughters Mary and Liz fall apart when Liz has her own political ambitions. She positions herself in a television interview against same-sex marriage . At the end of the film, Cheney appears to break through the Fourth Wall during an interview and gives a monologue. He does not regret any decision he has made in his political career, everything has served to protect America.

Age rating

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved for ages 12 and up . The statement of reasons for the release states: “With the help of a narrator and various, sometimes irritating, stylistic devices and with many leaps in time, the film paints an unfathomable picture of politics and its actors, but presents this with biting humor. The sometimes rapid narrative speed and the historical context represent a challenge for children. The depiction of war events and torture as well as individual images of an accident or an operation can overwhelm young children. "

Reviews

Director Adam McKay at the press conference at the Berlinale 2019

Frank Schnelle from epd Film writes that with Vice, Adam McKay is switching from the sophisticated ensemble piece to the epic biopic , and with its rapid pace, the investigative gesture and the unorthodox mixture of drama and comedy, the film is very reminiscent of The Big Short . McKay's staging style is wonderfully innovative, says Schnelle: “Again and again he finds camera positions that literally illuminate the action from a surprising perspective. The old rule, according to which you should enter a scene as late as necessary and exit again as early as possible, takes him to extremes when he cuts into the middle of dialogues and is often content with hints that others are only really getting going. “ Vice was also named Film of the Month for February 2019 by epd Film . It says there: " Vice is an important contemporary film because it uses Dick Cheney and his key role in the Bush administration to open a chapter in recent American history, the consequences of which extend to the present day."

Björn Hayer from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung believes that McKay's film turns out to be a razor-sharp painting of a lying caste, and that Vice stands out from the multitude of works in the now inflationary genre of biopic , as the film is not satisfied with the mere illustration of a vita : “With its mostly ironic, ambiguous montages, it reveals an aesthetic of the politician between a social role and the perfidious haggling of particular interests . You have to count this fantastic piece of cinematographically processed contemporary history with its eight Oscar nominations undoubtedly to the top of this year. ”McKay chose the beating heart as the most important metaphor, Hayer continued, because the irony of the drama includes Cheney's own heart failure, which he caused ends up in hospital several times with heart attacks, until an organ transplant is finally necessary: “Even the operation and the cut-open body reveal a symbolic level. Just as the doctors penetrate the inside of the politician, the film gives us an insight into the shadowy world of the US government apparatus. "

Günter H. Jekubzik from the Kino Arbeitsgemeinschaft Kino explains that Vice is by no means a dry political film, but is working with Michael Moore on the analysis of the Republican presidencies: “The difference lies in the personalized villain as the source of all evil, but that again provides a blueprint for the dissolution of democratic rules by President Trump. ”In brief moments Vice show terrifyingly what these power games mean for people in Korea or Iraq, and these people include the US soldiers.

Use in school lessons

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends the film for the subjects of politics, English, German, social studies / community studies , ethics / religion and art and offers materials for the film for teaching purposes. There it says, among other things, that the film, with its wealth of information that leads to the upheavals of the recent present, is suitable for history and political lessons.
