John Yoo (2012)

John Choon Yoo (born July 10, 1967 in Seoul ) is an American lawyer, professor and author. He created the legal basis for torture by the CIA during the presidency of George W. Bush .

Life

As a child, Yoo emigrated from South Korea to the United States with his parents and grew up in Philadelphia . He studied American History in Harvard and took a law degree ( JD ) at the Yale Law School . In 1993 he was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar .

During the reign of George W. Bush (2001 to 2009) he was appointed assistant to the Attorney General  in the Office of Legal Counsel (dt. Office of Legal Counsel ) in the United States Department of Justice appointed. Here he largely worked on the legal interpretation of the Geneva Convention , on the basis of which the war on terror was waged. Together with Jay Bybee he is also co-author of the so-called torture memos , a legal assessment " enhanced interrogation techniques " ( enhanced interrogation techniques ). This is the legal basis for the use of torture by the CIA.

For the first time in April 2002, Yoo approved the torture of Abu Subaida . In August 2002, he drew up the binding legal guideline according to which the CIA conducted its interviews. According to this, everything was allowed that did not lead to organ failure, the failure of bodily functions or death.

When Barack Obama took office, Yoo had to resign. Since then he has been teaching again at the University of Berkeley in California .

Since 2003 he has been visiting professor at the American Enterprise Institute , a think tank that shaped politics during the term of office of George W. Bush.

He was part of the Bush Six , charged in 2009 by the Spanish examining magistrate Baltasar Garzón with the use of torture.

Since April 13, 2013, the Russian government has banned him from entering the country, stating that he was responsible for the legalization of torture and the indefinite detention of prisoners. This happened in a direct temporal connection with the Magnitzky list , on which Russian officials are listed, who are prohibited from entering western states.

In the 2016 US presidential election , Yoo did not vote for Donald Trump . However, he is now close to Trump. So this one advertised Yoos latest book ( Defender in Chief: Donald Trump's Fight for Presidential Power ) on Twitter and met with the lawyer in early August 2020.
