Karen Parfitt Hughes (born December 27, 1956 in Paris , France ) is an American politician from Texas .

Hughes is a member of the Republican Party and was one of the closest advisors to US President George W. Bush as the White House communications director from 2001 to 2002 . In 2004, the Texas newspaper Dallas Morning News described her as "the most powerful woman who has ever worked in the White House ". From March 2005 to October 2007, acted Karen Hughes as Head of Department of Public Diplomacy ( Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs ) in the United States Department of State .

Her father, Harold Parfitt, was the last US governor of the Panama Canal Zone .
