Lynne Ann Vincent Cheney (born August 14, 1941 in Casper , Wyoming ) is an American literary scholar and author. She is the wife of the 46th Vice President of the United States , Richard B. Cheney . They met in high school and were married in 1964. They have two daughters, Elizabeth was born in 1966 and Mary was born in 1969.

Cheney graduated from Colorado College and the University of Colorado with honors. At the University of Wisconsin , she was with a dissertation on Matthew Arnold 's Possible Perfection: A Study of the Kantian Strain in Arnold's Poetry doctorate .

Cheney headed the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1986 to 1993 . From 1994 to 2001 she was on the board of directors of Lockheed Corporation for which she received US $ 120,000 annually . In 1995 she founded the conservative organization American Council of Trustees and Alumni .

In 2000, there were considerations to nominate Lynne Cheney for the office of US Vice President. George W. Bush finally chose her husband, who held that office from 2001 to 2009.

Cheney serves on the board of directors of Reader's Digest . She also works at the American Enterprise Institute .
