Karen Sue Pence (born November 18, 1958 in Indianapolis , Indiana as Karen Sue Batten ) is an American teacher, painter and wife of Vice President Mike Pence . She has been the Second Lady of the United States of America since he was sworn in on January 20, 2017 .

Family and education

Karen Pence grew up in Broad Ripple , Indianapolis, where she graduated from Bishop Chatard High School. She is the daughter of Lillian (nee Hacker) and John Batten († 1988). She graduated from Butler University to become an art teacher.

Career

Karen Pence has taught at John Strange Elementary, Acton Elementary, Fall Creek Elementary, and The Orchard School, all located in Indianapolis.

Private life

Pence met her future husband Mike at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Indianapolis, where he attended a mass where she played guitar and sang Christian songs.

She and her husband are parents to three children.
