Joan Mondale
Joan Adams Mondale (born August 8, 1930 in Eugene , Oregon , † February 3, 2014 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was the wife of Walter Mondales , the former Vice President of the United States .
Her father was a Presbyterian preacher. After attending public schools, she went to college. There she majored in history as well as art and French. After graduating, she worked for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts .
In 1955 she married Walter Mondale, who by then had already started a political career in the Democratic Party . She gave birth to two sons and a daughter. After her husband was elected vice president, President Jimmy Carter made her an arts commissioner. Furthermore, Joan Mondale worked for various art organizations. When her husband was US ambassador to Japan from 1993 to 1996 , she was intensively involved in Japanese art. She also liked to make pottery .
In her later years, she served on the boards of the National Portrait Gallery and other arts organizations, as well as Macalester College , of which she was a graduate. She died of complications from Alzheimer's disease at the age of 83 .
