history

After a shortage of fine arts in the Minneapolis area was discovered, interested citizens came together, which in 1883 founded the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts . With the aim of making a wide range of art accessible to the city, she organized various art exhibitions. After changing its name to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 1889, it moved to its first permanent location in the newly built Minneapolis Public Library . Its own museum building, designed by McKim, Mead, and White , opened in 1915. It was considered to be one of the most beautiful museums built in the architectural style of Beaux Arts architecture . The building was originally intended to be the first of several sections, ultimately only the front building was built in this style. The designs for later extensions come from other well-known architects. An extension of Kenzō Tange was completed in 1974 and an extension by Michael Graves in 2006.

In addition to the permanent collection, traveling exhibitions are organized. Local business partners finance many of these exhibitions. The free entry is unusual. An entrance fee is only charged for special exhibitions. The museum is supported by financial aid from the Hennepin County administration .

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is also home to the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP). The MAEP is an artist-led program that supports Minnesota-based artists and aims to bring their work to a wide audience.
