References in a personal data record in the population register are references that refer to a data record of another person. They contain information about whether a person has a spouse or partner or legal guardian, and whether they are the father or mother of a minor child. References to underage children only refer to their parents, not to their siblings.

Pointers are used for statistical evaluations, for example households can be generated with their help for statistical purposes.
