Ettie Garner

Mariette "Ettie" Rheiner Garner (born July 17, 1869 in Sabinal , Texas , † August 17, 1948 ) was the wife of John Nance Garner , the former Vice President of the United States .

She was born as the daughter of a Swiss immigrant who came to America in the wake of the gold rush . Mariette's mother died early. She was educated in various boarding schools. She met John Nance Garner when he was running for Uvalde County judge. Initially, she was against his candidacy as she believed he promoted gambling and alcohol consumption. They married in 1895. Ettie Garner had a son named Tully.

Ettie Garner died of a nervous disease in 1948.
