Elizabeth Lynne "Liz" Cheney (born July 28, 1966 in Madison , Wisconsin ) is an American politician and member of the Republican Party . She has represented the state of Wyoming in the US House of Representatives since January 3, 2017 . From January 3, 2019 to May 12, 2021, she was Republican Conference Chairwoman , making her the third highest Republican woman in the Republican parliamentary group after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Republican Whip Steve Scalise .

Career

Elizabeth Cheney, largely known as Liz Cheney, is the eldest daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne . She graduated from high school and Colorado College . Then she studied law. She practiced as a lawyer in a law firm. She also became a consultant to the International Finance Corporation . She also served in a variety of roles at the State Department during President George W. Bush's administration . She is also a member of the International Board of Advisors at the University of Wyoming and has since made political comments on the Fox News Channel . Since 1993 she has been married to the lawyer Philip Perry, with whom she has five children. She lives in Wilson , Teton County .

Politically, like her father, she joined the Republican Party . She supported her father's election campaigns and that of George W. Bush. In 2008 she supported first Fred Thompson and then Mitt Romney , both of whom failed in their party's primary election for the nomination of the presidential candidate. From 2009 to 2013 she headed the Keep America Safe organization . In 2013 and 2014 she was considering running for the US Senate . In July 2014, however, she withdrew her application. In the congressional elections of 2016 Cheney was in the only constituency of Wyoming in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC voted where they succeed on January 3, 2017 Cynthia Lummis took that had 2016 no longer a candidate. In 2018 she won the congressional election in the Wyoming constituency again and was thus re-elected to the House of Representatives.

In 2021, as one of 10 Republican representatives, she supported the second impeachment against Trump , which was brought about after the storm on the Capitol , while 201 Republicans voted against the impeachment of the president. Because of this, she was challenged by Anthony Bouchard , a senator from the Wyoming Senate, in the primary for the House of Representatives election. Trump-loyal MPs also spoke out in favor of depriving her of the leadership position in the Republican faction.

A large majority of Republican MPs, however, voted for Cheney to remain in the Republican parliamentary group leadership in the US House of Representatives. The Republican MPs had previously argued internally about their position for several hours. While the right wing called for Cheney's punishment, the vast majority opposed it. At the same time, the group decided not to reprimand MEP Marjorie Taylor Greene , who had previously been noticed as a QAnon supporter and a racist .

Despite the threat of being voted out of office both in the parliamentary group leadership and in her constituency in Wyoming, she repeatedly criticized former President Trump and her party for the personality cult around the ex-president. This made her next to Mitt Romney a well-known Trump critic in the Republican Party and at the same time led to her being voted out of the leadership of the Republican parliamentary group by the Republican parliamentary group leader Kevin McCarthy . Before voting on her exclusion from the leadership of the Republican parliamentary group in the House of Representatives, she said she would not watch as the lies spread by Trump that he was fraudulent in the 2020 US presidential election were undermining democracy becomes. On May 12, 2021, she was voted out of office by the parliamentary group of the Republican Conference Chairwoman . McCarthy and Trump had previously spoken out in favor of Elise Stefanik as the successor in office. After she was voted out of office, she said, in view of Trump supporters' concerns about a future Trump presidential candidacy, that she would "do everything possible to ensure that the former president never gets anywhere near the Oval Office again ." One saw the danger that he would still provoke with his language, as well as his lack of commitment to the constitution. It is important to ensure that people are elected who are committed to the constitution.
