Stephen Friel Nuckolls (born August 16, 1825 in Grayson County , Virginia , † February 14, 1879 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an American politician . Between 1869 and 1871 he represented the Wyoming Territory in the US House of Representatives .

Early years

Stephen Nuckolls attended public schools in his home country. In 1846 he moved to Linden , Missouri . There he worked in trade between 1847 and 1853. In 1854 he moved to the Nebraska Territory , where he founded the city of Nebraska City , where he held some local government offices. In 1855 he also founded the Platte Valley Bank . In 1859, Nuckolls was a member of the Territorial House of Representatives. In 1860 he moved to the Colorado Territory , where he was involved in mining and banking. Via a stopover in New York City , Nuckolls came to Cheyenne in 1867 , which was then still part of the Dakota Territory . There he was again active in the trade.

Political career

Stephen Nuckolls became a member of the Democratic Party . After the establishment of the Wyoming Territory, he was elected the first delegate of that area to the US Congress in 1869 . He exercised this mandate between December 6, 1869 and March 3, 1871. But he had no voting rights in the US House of Representatives because Wyoming was not yet an official state of the United States . In the congressional elections of 1870 he was defeated by William Theopilus Jones , the candidate of the Republican Party . After that he went back to Wyoming to pursue his private interests, but remained connected to politics. In 1871 he became a member and chairman of the territorial government council. In 1872 and 1876, Nuckolls was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions . In July 1872 he moved to Salt Lake City. Stephen Nuckolls also died there in 1879.
