Barbara Lynn Cubin (born November 30, 1946 in Salinas , California ) is an American politician of the Republican Party .

After attending Natrona County High School in Casper , Cubin studied at Creighton University in Omaha , Nebraska . There she graduated in 1969, after which she worked as a teacher and social worker.

From 1987 to 1991 she was a member of the House of Representatives from Wyoming ; between 1992 and 1994 she was a member of the state Senate . From 1995 to 2009 Cubin was a member of the US House of Representatives for the state of Wyoming , where she prevailed against eight competitors in the Republican primary . In the actual election she won with a 53 percent share of the vote against the Democrat Bob Schuster. She is the first woman ever to represent Wyoming in Congress . After being re-elected several times, she did not stand for election in 2008; she was succeeded on January 3, 2009 by Cynthia Lummis .
