Salinas is a city in Monterey County in the US state of California .

geography

Salinas is located in the valley of the same name . The Salinas River is 6 km south of the city . Salinas is the largest city in Monterey County and also the administrative seat.

Salinas is divided into six districts. The Highway 101 runs through Salinas.

history

After the area around Salinas was originally inhabited by Native Americans, the first foreigners settled in from 1822. In the middle of the 19th century, Salina's population grew due to the increase in agricultural production. Salinas was connected to the railroad network by the Southern Pacific Railroad . In 1872 Salinas became the administrative seat of Monterey County . Agriculture remained the city's main industry. Salinas is therefore often referred to in the USA as the Salad Bowl of the World , because four fifths of the total lettuce grown in the USA grow in the Salinas River valley around the city . In 1924 Salinas had the highest per capita income in the entire United States, which led to a construction boom. There are still numerous Art Deco buildings in Salinas today .

The name Salinas is derived from the nearby salt fields.

The city has 161,042 inhabitants (as of 2016). The urban area has a size of 49.2 km² and is located around the geographical coordinates 36.68 ° north, 121.64 ° west. Spanish speakers are the largest group of the population, accounting for 71.3% of the population. In 2006 the median household income was US $ 46,419 with 12.3% of the population below the poverty line.
