Cebu City (officially: City of Cebu ; Cebuano : Dakbayan sa Sugbo or; Filipino : Lungsod ng Cebu ) is the capital of the province of Cebu in the Visayas archipelago and was founded in 1565 as the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines . Along with Manila, Cebu is the Philippines’s second international air hub.
Location and history
The city is located on the island of the same name . Cebu City is the center of Metro Cebu , the second most important metropolitan area in the country, which also includes the cities of Lapu-Lapu , Mandaue City , Talisay City and Danao City and also has an economic impact on Mindanao in the south . The Mactan-Cebu International Airport in Lapu-Lapu City can be reached in twenty minutes drive from Cebu City. The metropolis has the most important trading port in the Philippines, an oil refinery and several universities. With the Asia-IT Park, the city has had a special economic area since 2008, which mainly houses telecommunications and information technology companies (call centers and software companies) and is exclusively export-oriented ( business process outsourcing ). The vernacular in Cebu is not the Filipino official language Tagalog , but Cebuano .
Cebu City was the starting point for the Christian colonization of the Philippines under Ferdinand Magellan and is now the seat of the archbishop.
