Lapu-Lapu City is a Philippine city ( Component City ) in the province of Cebu . Her previous name was Opon. It was renamed Lapu-Lapu in honor of the Filipino national hero and the Lapu-Lapu and Maghellan Shrine was built in his honor .
The city occupies most of the island of Mactan , which is just a few hundred meters east of the island of Cebu and is connected to it by two bridges. Furthermore, parts of the Olango Archipelago , five kilometers east of the island of Mactan, and a few other small islands belong to the urban area. The waters around Lapu-Lapu City are counted as part of the Danajon reef system in the south of the Camotes Sea .
Lapu-Lapu City belongs to the metropolitan area of Cebus Metro Cebu with its center Cebu City . Your neighboring communities are the Municipality of Cordova (Cebu) in the southwest and Mandaue City in the north on the island of Cebu . Lapu-Lapu City is connected to Cebu Island by two bridges: the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge and the Marcelo-Fernan Bridge .
The area of today's city was called Mactan even before the arrival of Spanish colonists . Augustinians founded the place Opon in 1730 , this name existed until the city elevation in 1961, when the place was renamed to Lapu-Lapu.
