Boljoon (also Boljo-on ) is a Filipino municipality in the province of Cebu .

geography

Boljoon is bordered by Alcoy in the north, Oslob in the south, and Malabuyoc in the west. To the east is the Strait of Cebu and Bohol Island .

Boljoon is politically divided into eleven barangays . Six of them, including Poblacion (the main town), are on the coast, the others are inland.

history

Boljoon is one of the oldest place in Cebu. However, the exact founding date is controversial. According to the local historian Marin Morales, the place Bolijoon was founded in 1600 and the municipality a year later. According to a document preserved in the Archives of the Augustinian Province , the parish was officially established in 1692 (during the Spanish rule, the terms “city” and “parish” were mostly used interchangeably).

Boljoon Church

The church of Boljoon was built in the Rococo style. It contains old and elaborate carvings and bas-reliefs . The inside is nicely decorated. 28 two-meter-thick columns made of mortar and limestone support the two-meter-thick walls.

The Church of Boljoon is the oldest preserved original stone church in Cebu. In 1999, the church of was National Historical Institute of the Philippines ' historic national landmark "for (dt.
