Baroque churches in the Philippines

Baroque churches are common in the Philippines and are usually in good condition. In 1993, four of these churches were in the World Heritage List of UNESCO added. These are the Church of the Immaculate Conception of San Agustín , Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción , the Church of Santo Tomas de Villanueva and the Church of San Agustín . They are considered to be particularly valuable, both in terms of architecture and in terms of their historical significance. Five other Baroque churches were included in the Philippines' list of proposals for inclusion in the World Heritage List in 2006; they are the Church complex of Patrocinio de Maria , Church of La Inmaculada Concepcion , Church complex of San Pedro Apostol , Church complex of San Isidro Labrador and the Church of San Mattias .

The Church of San Agustín in Manila, in the city fortress Intramuros , near Manila Cathedral, is the oldest church in the Philippines. The building, originally made of wood and palm leaves, was replaced by a stone church at the end of the 16th century; it was the first temple of the Augustinian order in the Philippines. The current church was built in the 18th century in the Filipino-Spanish baroque style; it was the only colonial building to survive the Battle of Manila (1945) .
