The Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines and has a length of about 350 kilometers. The mountain range is located in the east of the island of Luzon and begins in the extreme northeast in the province of Cagayan and ends in the south in the province of Quezon , southeast of the Laguna de Bay , the largest lake in the country. The foothills of the middle mountain range reach west to the province of Nueva Vizcaya and connect there with the Caraballo Mountains , the central mountain node of the Philippine Cordillera .

The highest peak is Mount Anacuao with a height of 1850  m . In the north of the mountains lies the only active volcano in the mountains, the Cagua . The Sierra Madre is home to around 1.4 million hectares of rainforest, which corresponds to around 40% of the total forest area in the Philippines. They are of great importance for the preservation of the country's biodiversity , as many rare endemic animal and plant species live in them .

The oldest human fossil remains on the territory of the Philippines were discovered near the municipality of Peñablanca in the archaeological digs in the Cagayan Valley , in the Callao Cave. They have been dated to an age of approximately 67,000 years. Another significant site of early human activity in the Sierra Madre is the Arubo Archaeological Site and, near Laguna de Bay, the Angono petroglyphs .

In the Sierra Madre there are a number of nature parks and nature reserves that form the Sierra Madre Biosphere Corridor. These are the Peñablanca Protected Landscape & Seascape , the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park , the Aurora Memorial National Park , the Minalungao National Park , the Fuyot Spring National Park , Pamitinan Protected Landscape , Marikina Watershed Forest Reserve, and the Angat Watershed Forest Reserve .

In the area of the central Sierra Madre is the Angat reservoir , from which over 90% of the drinking water for the metropolitan region is taken. In the southern Sierra Madre which are Caliraya Lake and the Lumot Lake , both important recreational areas of the metropolitan region of Metro Manila are.
