The Central Panay Mountains are a mountain range in the Philippines . They are located in the western part of Panay Island and include areas of all four island provinces of Antique , Aklan , Capiz and Iloilo .

The Central Panay Mountains extend from the south to the northwestern peninsula of Panay Island over a length of approx. 120 km and a width of approx. 35 to 40 km. The mountains are the headwaters of the Jalaur , Panay , Aklan and Iloilo rivers . The highest mountain in the range is the Nangtud with a height of approx. 2,117 meters, according to other sources 2,073 meters above sea level. Other mountains in this mountain range are the Madja-as (2,110 meters) in the northern part, the Baloy (1,728 m) in the central part, and the Inaman (1,585 m) in the southern region of the mountains.

The mountains are covered by a closed rainforest on an area of 120,770.60 hectares, with a wide variety of flora and fauna, such as the largest flowering plant on Panay, the Rafflesia lobata and the Rafflesia speciosa . The latter was first described in 2005.

The mountains are an important refuge for the Philippine Duck ( Anas luzonica ), the Taric hornbill ( Penelopides panini ), the Panayhorn ( Aceros waldeni ) and the Negro jungle flycatcher ( Rhinomyias albigularis ). The endangered mammals , the Prince Alfred deer ( Rusa alfredi or Cervus alfredi ) and the Visayas pustular pig ( Sus cebifrons ) also live in the rainforests of the mountains .

The PanayCon project was founded to enable population counts and to document the flora and fauna . This project is supported by the University of Bochum and the Frankfurt Zoological Society .
