The kitanglad mountain range is a nature reserve in the province of Bukidnon in the Philippines . It is located about 50 kilometers as the crow flies southeast of Cagayan de Oro . The area around the Kitanglad volcano was recognized as a national park on December 14, 1990.

The nature reserve has a size of 47,270 hectares and includes 5 high mountains in the mountain region, the Dulang-dulang , the second highest mountain in the Philippines with 2,938 m, the Kitanglad with 2,899 m, the Maagnaw with 2,742 m, the Lumuluyaw with 2,612 m and the Tuminungan with an altitude of 2,400 m. The area of ​​the nature reserve is divided into a 31,236 hectare core zone and a 16,034 hectare buffer zone in the northern area. Together with the Mount Kalatungan Range Natural Park , the Manupali Watershed Forest Reserve and the Muleta Watershed Forest Reserve , the protection zones form a biosphere corridor with an area of ​​1,277.31 km².

In the nature reserve, it rains almost all year round, with a short dry period from February to April. March is the driest month, June the wettest. At lower altitudes, temperatures vary between 25 ° C in January and 30 ° C in June. In Lalawan they can drop to 12 ° C at night, at higher altitudes it can be even colder.

Hydrology

The headwaters of the Tagoloan River lie on the northern flank of the Kitanglad Mountains and parts of the headwaters of the Cagayan River lie in the west of the mountains .

Flora and fauna

There are a total of 58 tree species and 185 different species of hardwoods in the park. The fauna in the Kitanglad Mountains is very rich and varied. A total of 63 species of mammals, such as the flying squirrel , yellow-faced horseshoe bat ( Rhinolophus virgo ) and the Philippines deer, were recorded in counts . The National Park is the only known habitat on Mindanao Island for the Mindanao hairtail rat . 25 species of reptiles and 26 species of amphibians have also been identified in the park grounds.

Of the total 168 species of birds 37% are endemic to the island of Mindanao and the Philippines, as the Mindanao parrot , the Mindanao Lorikeet that Mindanao scops owl , Mindanao Brown dove of Mindanao Breitrachen , the Philippine Eagle-Owl , the Philippine Eagle and the Philippine Hawk-Eagle .

Culture

The indigenous people of Bukidnons, made up of the indigenous tribes of the Manobo and Talaandig, live mostly in the forest areas that they consider sacred as these areas are used as burial sites. The locals live from the forest, which they use as a source of food, but also for natural medicine. Before entering the mountains, mountaineers and hikers have to obtain permission from the tribe elders and perform a ritual to make the spirits of the ancestors benevolent.
