Demographics and language

According to oral tradition of the native Talaandig, there were originally four ethnic groups in central Mindanao: the Maranao, who now live in the province of Lanao del Sur , the Magindanaon, the Manobo and the Talaandig, who live in the east, the south and the north-central region the then province of Cotabato.

When the civil government divided Central Mindanao into provinces at the beginning of the 20th century , Bukidnon was mainly inhabited by indigenous people . Since then, people have immigrated from many other regions of the Philippines, especially from the central Philippine Visayas islands of Cebu , Bohol and Panay . The cultural diversity of Bukidnon was also expanded by immigrants from the northern main island of Luzon , such as the Ilocanos, Batangueño, Igorots and Ivatans (from the Batan Islands in the extreme north ).

Over time, many of the indigenous peoples withdrew further and further into the mountains and forests, where they have been able to preserve large parts of their cultural heritage to this day. Today you can find the Talaandig in the northwest, the Higaonon in the north, the Bukidnon in the east, the Western Bukidnon Manobo in the west and the Umayamnon, Tigwa and Matigsalug Manobo in the southeast of the province.
