Davao Occidental ( Cebuano : Kasadpang Dabaw) is the 81st and newest province in the Philippines . It is part of the Davao region on the island of Mindanao . The capital is the municipality of Malita . To the east lies the Gulf of Davao . It also shares a water boundary with the Indonesian province of North Sulawesi in the south. Davao Occidental covers a total of 2,163.45 square kilometers on the southwest tip of Mindanao. The province is bordered by Davao del Sur to the northwest and Sarangani to the west .

The topography of Davao Occidental is hilly, rugged and sloping. Almost the entire province consists of mountains. The east coast consists of cliffs and beaches with hills just behind them. Coconut palms and hardwood trees mostly dominate the mainland of the province.

history

Davao Occidental was created by Republic Act 10360 , enacted July 23, 2013 , which includes five of the eight parishes that made up the 2nd Congressional District of Davao del Sur and were declared a new province. RA 10360 was passed by the House of Representatives on November 28, 2012 and by the Senate on December 5, 2012 , and was signed by President Benigno Aquino III on January 14, 2013 . A referendum was held on October 28, 2013, along with the local elections, and the creation of the province was confirmed with a majority of the votes cast.

The motive for founding the province was to promote the economic situation and social progress of the communities. Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. , Who promoted the establishment of Davao Occidental, said the distances from Digos City , the provincial capital of Davao del Sur, to other communities in the Second Congressional District are far, both affecting the effective delivery of utility services also access to government offices. The representative of Davao del Sur, Marc Douglas Cagas , however, viewed the establishment of the province as nothing more than gerrymandering for political purposes.

Davao del Sur government officials, with the assistance of the Home Office and local government, exercised jurisdiction over Davao Occidental until the elected local officials in the 2016 election took office.

Administrative division

The province consists of the following 5 municipalities:

economy

The main industries in Davao Occidental are aquaculture and agriculture . Economic products in the province include fish , bananas, and coconuts , which are then exported to several large cities in southern Mindanao, including Davao City . Due to the mountainous and densely forested nature, rice cultivation is limited to the few flat areas in the province.

The capital Malita is the main commercial center of the province.

Tourism is becoming increasingly important in the province. Potential travel destinations are mainly focused on the province's coastal beaches and the islands of Sarangani and Balut to the south.

Infrastructure

Davao Occidental is only partially served by main roads. Buses , jeepneys and passenger cars that come from and serve the cities of Davao and Digos are the main modes of transport in the province. Boats serve as the primary means of maritime transport for coastal areas that do not yet have roads and the island community of Sarangani.
