Zamboanga del Sur is a province in the southeast of the Zamboanga Peninsula (Region IX) on the Philippine island of Mindanao. The capital of the province is Pagadian City .
geography
The province is bounded in the north by Zamboanga del Norte , in the west by Zamboanga Sibugay , in the northeast it borders on Misamis Occidental and the Bay of Panguil , in the east it borders on the province of Lanao del Norte . The south of the province is characterized by an extensive coastline with access to the Gulf of Moro . The entire area has an area of 4,735 km². The largest inland lake in the province is 7.92 km² Wood Lake in the municipality of Lakewood.
The mountainous region stretches north from Sibugay to the southwest and runs along the northern border with the Salug Valley. The coastline stretches from south to west over a wide plain to the coastal area of Baganian in the southeast.
The longest river on the entire peninsula, the Sibougey River, has its source in the Zamboanga del Surs mountains. It gets its water mainly from the area around Bayog before it flows into the sea in the Bay of Sibuguey . Other rivers of note are the Kumalarang River and the Salug River in Molave.
Demographics and language
The most commonly used dialect is Cebuano , spoken by 61.31% of the population. In addition, the dialects Tagalog , Subanon, Chavacano , Ilonggo, Maguindanao, Boholano and Ilokano are common in the region.
economy
As in all of Mindanao, agriculture dominates here too . Export products include coconut oil , rice , corn and fruits, as well as gift items, souvenirs and housewares made from handmade paper, rattan, wood and bamboo. history
Zamboanga del Sur was removed from the southwestern part of the former province of Zamboanga on September 17, 1952 with the entry into force of the "Republic Act No. 711" and made the 52nd province of the Philippines. 42 parishes and one city, Pagadian City , have now been formed from the previously existing 11 localities . This was at the same time named the capital of the province.
In February 2001 there was another political change when the inhabitants of Zamboanga del Sur voted for the formation of a new, third province on the Zamboanga peninsula called Zamboanga Sibugay . After the split, the north-eastern part of the original province remained as Zamboanga del Sur.
