The Panguil Bay is a bay on the north coast of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines . It separates the provinces of Misamis Occidental from the province of Lanao del Norte ; at the head of the bay it borders on the province of Zamboanga del Sur . It is a sea bulge in the southwest of the Bay of Iligan . The Philippine cities Tangub City and Ozamis City lie on its coastline . The mountains of Mount Malindang rise to the north of the bay .

There are extensive mudflats and large mangrove forests in the bay . On the island of Sumalig, a sanctuary for the saltwater crocodile ( Crocodylus porosus ) has been established by the local authorities . However, the population size and the migratory movements of the animals have hardly been researched. The region around the bay has a tropical, humid climate with no dry season; in some cases heavy precipitation falls .

There are only a few coral reefs in the bay ; they are located at the entrance of the bay in the sea area of the municipalities of Clarin and Maigo . They are known as the Hulaw-hulaw and Maigo Reefs; Marine Protected Areas were established around both by the local authorities . Since the establishment of the protection zones, an increase in fish stocks could be registered between 1991 and 1996. In 1991 only 50 species from 22 genera and in 1996 160 species from 32 genera were registered.

The Panguil Bay is traditionally very rich in fish. The waters are characterized as cloudy with visibility of less than one to 5 meters, but they are very rich in nutrients. There are numerous freshwater inflows at the head of the bay and extensive swamps in the hinterland. Investigations by Mindanao State University from Naawan in 2005 put the catch in the bay at 1,660.54 tons / year; this suggests that various fish stocks could be overexploited. The fishermen's catches were 40% different fish species, 35% molluscs and 25% crustaceans . The main fish species that are commercially fished are the Leiognathus equulus , Vagamugil cunnesius , Johnius borneensis , Gerres filamentosus and the Upeneus sulphureus . In the case of crustaceans, it is the Penaeus indicus , Scylla tranquebarica and Scylla olivacea . In the case of molluscs, there are the species Meretrix meretrix , Katylesia hiantina , Modiolus metcalfei and Psammotea elongate .
