history

Originally there was only one province called Misamis. With the Legislative Act No. 3537 of November 2, 1929, this province was divided into the two provinces Misamis Occidental with the capital Oroquieta City and Misamis Oriental with the capital Cagayan de Oro .

Occidental province included the localities of Baliangao, Lopez Jaena, Tudela, Clarin, Plaridel, Oroquieta, Aloran, Jimenez and Misamis. These nine original administrative communities of the province of Misamis Occidental were united to the three cities of Ozamiz, Oroquieta and Tangub. In addition, 14 administrative municipalities of the province remained as such.

The name Misamis is said to come from the word "Kuyamis" from the dialect Subano, which refers to a sweet type of coconut, the main product of the early settlers in this area.

Over the years the term was equated with the place and, after the arrival of Spanish settlers, not least because of them, changed to the current name "Misamis".
