Region (Philippines)
A region ( filipino Rehiyon ) is an administrative level in the Philippines . In 2017 there are 17 regions, which are divided into another 81 provinces ( Lalawigan ). From 2015 to 2017, the 18th region was the Negros Island Region
Provinces are the primary political subdivision in the Philippines. To facilitate administration, however, they are grouped into regions which, as a rule, do not have separate governments. Only the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) elects a regional assembly and a governor. The Cordillera Administrative Region was originally intended to be an autonomous region (Cordillera Autonomous Region). But the project failed due to two referendums, so that the area finally became an administrative region.

The regions are geographically divided between the three island groups Luzon , Visayas and Mindanao .

history
On September 24, 1972, by order of President Ferdinand Marcos, the provinces in eleven regions were united. Since then, new regions have been created or renamed.
- Jul 07, 1975 - Region XII is established and there are minor remodeling of some regions of Mindanao .
- Aug 21, 1975 - Region IX is divided into Regions IX-A and IX-B, there are other minor changes in the Mindanao regions
- 7 November 1975 - the region Metro Manila arises
- August 1, 1989 - Muslim Mindanao Autonomous Region is created.
- October 23, 1989 - the Cordillera region is added.
- February 23, 1995 - Region XIII (Caraga) is created, further small changes in the Mindanao regions.
- 1997 - Small reshuffles of the Mindanao regions.
- September 19, 2001 - Most of Mindanao regions are changed and renamed.
- May 17, 2002 - the regions CALABARZON (IV-A) and MIMAROPA (IV-B) emerge from the former region IV Southern Tagalog .
Former regions
The names and structure of the following regions have changed in recent years:
- Southern Tagalog was divided into the regions CALABARZON (or region IV-A) and MIMAROPA (or region IV-B).
- Western Mindanao was renamed the Zamboanga Peninsula , but still referred to as Region IX.
- Central Mindanao was renamed SOCCSKSARGEN , but still referred to as Region XII.
- Southern Mindanao was renamed the Davao Region , but still referred to as Region XI.
- From May 29, 2015 to August 7, 2017, the Negros Island Region (XVIII) consisted of parts of Regions VI and VII.
